MAWSECO Alternative Programs
School Closure and eLearning Plan
Inclement Weather Related School Closures: In the event of inclement weather that causes dangerous travel conditions or other hazards, MAWSECO programs may need to close. The decision to close programs will be based on information provided by emergency service providers and other area school districts. Closings may include cancellation of the school day, a late start, or early release. The MAWSECO program calendars and school days are developed so that there are more instructional hours planned than what is required by the State of Minnesota which allows some flexibility with closing school without having to make up some days.
If a MAWSECO program needs to close, it may or may not be necessary to hold school in other ways to meet instructional hour requirements. In response to a school closure, there are 3 possibilities: 1) Traditional School Closure with no make-up day necessary (up to 5 days built into calendar) 2) School Closure with eLearning day (students learn from their home that day, up to 5 days) 3) Traditional School Closure with a make-up day at a later time - The make-up day details will be communicated to families/students by MAWSECO administration.
eLearning Days: Minnesota State Statute 120A.414 allows school districts to provide online instruction, called eLearning, for up to 5 days per school year in situations of inclement weather. These eLearning days allow for online learning in place of in-person instruction. For students without access to technology or the internet, accommodations/alternatives are provided in place of online instruction. This document is intended to provide background information as well as inform how the MAWSECO eLearning plan will work.
Why use eLearning: When we have numerous weather-related school cancellations, instructional time is lost and the momentum in classrooms is slowed. While eLearning days cannot replace the face-to-face time students have with their teachers, they can provide better continuity in learning when school is interrupted.
Communication of School Closures and eLearning days: Families will receive an automated phone call or text message from MAWSECO with as much advance notice as possible about the designation of school closures and any use of an eLearning day. Messages will also be posted on the MAWSECO website and social media.
eLearning activities: On eLearning days, learning activities will be provided for all students. Generally, eLearning activities will be Google Classroom based. Students will follow the instructions for the day provided by their teacher(s) and complete their e-learning day activities in place of attending school in person. All eLearning day activities will need to be turned in to teachers and will count toward students’ grades. If students lack internet access to participate in eLearning, alternate arrangements can be made with the classroom teacher(s). Accommodations will be made for students who lack internet access to ensure their ability to participate in the required learning/assignments.
Attendance: Student attendance will be taken for eLearning days. Each student’s teacher and/or case manager will communicate the process for attendance. Examples of student attendance include, participating in Google Classroom activities, or parent verification of work. Other attendance strategies may also be used. Students who choose not to participate without an excused absence will receive an unexcused absence.
Questions: Program-specific eLearning procedures are outlined below. Please contact your student’s teacher(s) and/or your respective program’s site administrator with any questions about the eLearning procedures.
